Kristin Olliney and Isabella

"She’s come really far … but she has a long journey ahead of her, but we’ll take that together, too."

In 2010, Kristin Olliney and her daughter Isabella's lives were changed forever when Isabella came down with sudden acute encephalitis, which caused brain damage. Despite the number of challenges they face every day, Isabella and her mother face them head on and work on her rehabilitation every day.

Participate in BIA-MA's #BrainInjuryAffects Campaign

Have you suffered a brain injury or do you know someone who has? Do you work with, serve or care for a brain injury survivor? How are you affected by brain injury?

By the year 2020, brain injury will reach epidemic proportions. Annually, more than 1.7 million people sustain traumatic brain injuries as the result of a fall, motor vehicle accident, sports injury, domestic violence, or other external force. Millions more sustain brain injuries caused by brain tumors, strokes, excessive alcohol and drug use, seizure disorders, or lack of oxygen caused by airway obstruction.

In Massachusetts alone, nearly 64,000 individuals sustain TBIs every year. BIA-MA's goal this year is to raise visibility and awareness and increase access to state services for individuals with brain injury. More than 3,800 people are on a waiting list for services provided through the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC). Some of these services include day program services, residential services, access to recreational services and case management services. The time has come to meet their needs by increasing budget appropriations and reinforcing policies. BIA-MA has provided a script, which you can download below, to use when calling or e-mailing legislators in support of brain injury services. Click here to find out who your legislators are.

How can you help?

Good question. Brain Injury Affects Everyone! To advocate for brain injury survivors, we need you to tell us how brain injury affects you. Your story is important - your voice is important. We want to hear from you.

Step 1: Print out a BIA-MA sign and write in your relationship to brain injury in one word
Are you a survivor? Are you a husband, wife, mother, father, friend, sister, brother, neighbor, doctor, healthcare provider, caregiver or cousin of someone who sustained a brain injury?

Step 2: Take a photograph of yourself holding the sign

Step 3: Click Here to fill out the short form that describes how you are affected by brain injury and what services are necessary for you or someone else to live a fuller life. Or, fill out and submit the form at the bottom of this page.

Your input will aid in advocacy efforts to gain services and support for survivors of brain injury. If brain injury has affected you or someone you know, you can make a difference by getting involved in the campaign and telling your story today. Interact with the campaign on Twitter by using #BrainInjuryAffects in your tweets and on Facebook by going to http://www.facebook.com/BrainInjuryMA.

Step 4: If you prefer to print the form and mail it and your picture to BIA-MA, please download the PDF version of the form by clicking the PDF icon below and printing it, filling it out, and attaching a picture of yourself holding the sign.

  • Stories and photos can also be mailed to:
