Gateway
Gateway is a diversion program for juveniles, ages 13 through 16, who have been arrested for misdemeanor offenses that put themselves or others at risk. Similar in content but different in format from the BAR program, Gateway consists of two seminars and includes homework assignments and in-class empathy exercises that allow juveniles to experience what life might be like if they were to sustain a brain injury as a result of their risky behaviors. At each class, a brain injury survivor talks about his or her life before brain injury and compares it to living with a head injury. District attorneys, clerk magistrates, probation officers, and police officers, make referrals to the Gateway Program.
TBI survivors who were injured in an alcohol-related incident are needed for these prevention programs. Survivors injured as teenagers or young adults, regardless of their age today, have the most compelling effect on high-school students. Speakers receive assistance in preparing a speech as well as a stipend for speaking engagements. Call BIA-MA at (508) 475-0032.
