"I have always taken for granted that this sort of thing happens to other people, not me. To hear from people it did happen to is very compelling."
- Brains At Risk Participant
Brains At Risk is an awareness and prevention court referral program that links dangerous driving behaviors to the devastating effects of traumatic brain injury. For more than a decade, Brains At Risk has been educating and helping offenders, ages 17 and older, to understand the power of individual choice. The program's primary objective is to reduce the number of repeat offenders and thereby reduce the number of deaths and traumatic brain injuries caused by irresponsible driving.
Judges, district attorneys, clerk magistrates, probation officers, police officers, sheriffs, and defense attorneys throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts make referrals to the program and may require the program as a condition of probation or as an alternative to formal sentencing.
The Brains At Risk program is excited to announce that an updated curriculum will be available at all sites throughout the Commonwealth in January 2008. The science-based curriculum combines video, graphics and group discussion to bring to life the consequences of drunk and irresponsible driving. The one session program includes:
  • Facts & Causes of Brain Injury
  • Alcohol & Drugs: How do they affect your driving skills?
  • High Risk Driving Behaviors (speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, road rage)
  • Buckling Up: How important is it?
  • The impact of brain injury
  • How we can prevent brain injury?
One of the most powerful and compelling components of the program is a personal testimony by survivors of brain injury, who share their experiences with attendees.
Brains at Risk Referral Process

The referral process is simple and easy. Just download and print the form above, complete and fax to 508-475-0039. Brains At Risk will provide the referred individual with the necessary information for the seminar within two weeks and notify the appropriate agency of program completion (or failure) within five days of the scheduled seminar.
Brains At Risk has sites throughout Massachusetts, serving more than one hundred cities and towns. The Brains At Risk staff assign referred individuals to the next available seminar that is closest to their home. The Brains At Risk staff are available to answer any questions and discuss the program curriculum at your convenience.
With the launch of our enhanced program curriculum, the seminar fee will be raised to $50.00 beginning January 1, 2008.
