Think A-Head
The Think A-Head Program is a school-based classroom or assembly program for students in grades 4-12. Age-appropriate messages are designed to promote brain injury awareness and prevention.
The Elementary and Middle School Think A-Head Program encourages young people to adopt life-long healthy habits to avoid brain injury. They include a demonstration of correct helmet and seat belt use and discussion of bicycle safety and violence prevention. The middle-school program also addresses the role of alcohol and drugs as a cause of brain injury.
The High School Think A-Head Programs focuses on the consequences of risk-taking behavior, including drugs, alcohol, irresponsible driving, and violence. It stresses the importance of seat belts and helmets in reducing brain injury. A new component in the high school program addresses the risks of sports concussions and brain injury. Each year 60,000 high school athletes suffer concussions, and the majority of them go unreported. The most compelling part of the high school program is the personal testimony of survivors, who speak candidly about the impact of brain injury on their lives.
In 2006, BIA-MA's brain injury awareness and prevention programs were honored by the National Highway Safety Administration.
